(KEARNY, NJ) – On Wednesday, July 4, 2018, the Town of Kearny held its annual Fireworks Celebration at Veteran’s Memorial Field on Belgrove Drive. Mayor Alberto G. On Saturday, April 20, 2013, Mayor Alberto Santos, Town Council members and Recreation Commissioners attended opening day ceremonies for the Kearny Recreation Girls Softball Program at Veteran’s Field. This year, 208 girls registered for participation in the softball program which is now in its 48th year as a Town of Kearny Recreation program. This year, local businesses and organizations sponsored 17 teams of girls in grades Pre-K through 8th.
Saturday, April, 20th was a busy day around Kearny. The Town of Kearny held its 22nd annual River Cleanup at Riverbank Park in Kearny. Organized by 3rd Ward Councilwoman Carol Jean Doyle and co-sponsored by the Passaic Valley River Restoration Group, numerous volunteers showed up at the park’s Frank A. Vincent Marina to help remove litter and debris from the banks of the Passaic River. Young and old alike joined the effort.
On Saturday, April 13th , Mayor Alberto Santos, Town Council members and Recreation Committee members attended opening day ceremonies for Kearny Little League. At the same time they celebrated the completion and grand opening of the new Veterans Field Sports Facility with a ribbon cutting.
The Town of Kearny’s Uniform Crime Report Index for 2012 shows there were 1,320 reported crimes in Kearny in 2012, a drop of 18% from the previous year’s number of 1,630. Categorized by type of offense, there were drops in aggravated and simple assaults, burglaries, larcenies and arson. There were no homicides in 2012.
At the March 12, 2013 meeting of the Kearny Mayor and Council Resolution 2013-173, a resolution supporting PSE&G’s “Energy Strong: program, was passed unanimously. The “Energy Strong” program calls for a $3.9 billion investment over the next ten years in the utility infrastructure in the PSE&G service area of New Jersey.
On Sunday March 10, 2013 Irish eyes were smiling at the 40th Annual West Hudson St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Under clear blue skies, thousands of people lined Kearny Avenue to enjoy the parade. This year Grand Marshall James J. Miller, Sr., Deputy Grand Marshall Daniel J. Choffo and Honorary Irish Woman of the Year Carol Jean Doyle led the march through Harrison, East Newark and Kearny.
The Town of Kearny has launched an app for iPhone and Android users who want to report a neighborhood problem or quality-of-life issue and request Town services. Powered by SeeClickFix,® the place-based reporting platform allows residents to report neighborhood concerns such as litter, graffiti, potholes, litter, water leaks and malfunctioning traffic signals. Citizens can also use the app to check the status of any reported problem.
At the January 7, 2013 reorganization meeting of the Kearny Mayor and Council, resolution 2013-(R)-35 (below) was introduced by Mayor Santos and passed unanimously. This resolution is in response to actions taken by the Hackensack Meadowlands Municipal Committee requesting changes to the current Meadowlands tax sharing formula which could reduce revenue to the Town by almost $4 million a year.
