Town Of Kearny Celebrates The 4th Of July - A Grand Display of Patriotism
KEARNY, NJ – On Monday, July 4, 2011, the Town of Kearny held its annual Fireworks Celebration and Show at Veteran’s Park. Each year, the July 4th Fireworks Celebration becomes larger and more spectacular. An estimated 10,000 spectators enjoyed the festivities this year, which included a performance by the Garden State Concert Band, activities for children including a magic show, pony rides and face painting, as well as a 30 minute fireworks show.
Kearny Enacts Stronger Protections on the Purchase and Sale of Precious Metals by Dealers and Pawnbrokers
The Town of Kearny recently adopted stricter requirements for dealers of secondhand precious metals and jewelry. These requirements enhance the ability of law enforcement to identify and retrieve stolen precious metals and jewelry in a timely manner. Recommended by the Kearny Police Department, the new law applies to all secondhand dealers, which includes not only pawn shops but all businesses that purchase secondhand precious metals and jewelry.
Resolution in Support of the Meadowlands Tax Sharing Program
At its April 26, 2011 meeting, Mayor Alberto G. Santos and the Town Council unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the preservation of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission Inter-Municipal Tax Sharing (ITS) program. Under the ITS formula, municipalities with development in their Meadowlands district pay a portion of tax revenues from development into the tax sharing fund and municipalities where there is less development receive payment from the fund.
Kearny’s 20th Annual River Cleanup
On April 16, 2011, the Town of Kearny held its annual river cleanup at Riverbank Park in Kearny. Led by Councilwoman Carol Jean Doyle, numerous volunteers showed up at the park’s Frank A. Vincent Marina to help remove litter and debris from the banks of the Passaic River. Many school children participated as did volunteers from the Woman’s Club of Arlington, the Optimist Club, the Kearny Chapter of UNICO and Pathways to Independence.
Flags at Half-Mast in Honor of Korean War Soldier Corporal John W. Lutz
The Department of Defense POW/ Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced that the remains of a serviceman, missing in action from the Korean War, have been identified and returned to his family for burial with full military honors.
Kearny’s Recreation Volunteer Appreciation Night
On Tuesday, March 1, 2011, the Town of Kearny held its 2nd Annual Recreation Volunteer Appreciation Night to thank volunteers for their commitment to children involved in sports and recreation in the Town of Kearny. All volunteers received a Certificate of Appreciation and a Cardinal Recognition Pin from the Recreation Department and soda and appetizers courtesy of Applebee’s.
