On Thursday, December 1, 2016 residents celebrated at the Annual Kearny UEZ Tree Lighting Festival outside Town Hall on Kearny Avenue. The festival has become a popular town-wide tradition and the kickoff of the holiday season in Kearny. The evening began at 5:30 p.m. with a concert on the steps of Town Hall featuring performances by the Kearny High School Ensemble, a choir ensemble of 6th graders from all of the Kearny Public Schools and members of the Next Step Dance Company.
The Kearny Recreation Department and Mrs. Desiree Mills celebrated the conclusion of the Fall 2016 Art Class with an Art Gallery at the Kearny Public Library to celebrate all students hard work. Kearny’s annual Halloween parade stepped off at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2016. The beautiful autumn afternoon was perfect for the ghosts, goblins and superheroes to parade up Kearny Avenue. On Saturday, October 8, 2016, the Kearny Fire Department held its annual Open House at the Midland Avenue headquarters. The event included refreshments, information on fire safety and demonstrations by firefighters. Mayor Alberto Santos and Councilmembers Carol Jean Doyle, Eileen Eckel, Marytrine De Castro, and Richard Konopka attended the open house along with residents, many of them children.

On Saturday, September 24, 2016, Pathways to Independence, Inc. held their Annual Walk-A-Thon at West Hudson Park. Pathways to Independence provides job skills training and vocational opportunities for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, helping them achieve their fullest potential. The organization’s facility is located at 60 Kingsland Avenue in Kearny. Close to 200 individuals gathered at West Hudson Park to take part in the walk.
