On Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the Regular Meeting of the Mayor and Town Council, Paul Silverman presented the Silverman Family Scholarship to Janine Migliaccio, a current student at the Culinary Arts Institute (CAI) of Hudson County Community College in Jersey City. Janine Migliaccio is a resident of the Town of Kearny and graduate of Kearny High School.
Tax bills for the next four quarters were mailed to property owners in early August. Taxes for the 2011 third quarter are due by September 1, 2011. After September 1st, interest will be charged on delinquent amounts calculated from August 1st. The Tax Collector’s Office, located in the Town Hall at 402 Kearny Avenue, will be open until 7:00 pm on August 24th.
National Night Out, sponsored by the Kearny Community Policing Unit, was held last week on Belgrove Drive and Veteran’s Field. Hundreds of town residents turned out for the event which featured a wide range of activities for children including a bounce ride, balloon art, ice cream and a chance to spray a fire hose at a target.
KEARNY, NJ – On Monday, July 4, 2011, the Town of Kearny held its annual Fireworks Celebration and Show at Veteran’s Park. Each year, the July 4th Fireworks Celebration becomes larger and more spectacular. An estimated 10,000 spectators enjoyed the festivities this year, which included a performance by the Garden State Concert Band, activities for children including a magic show, pony rides and face painting, as well as a 30 minute fireworks show.
The Town of Kearny recently adopted stricter requirements for dealers of secondhand precious metals and jewelry. These requirements enhance the ability of law enforcement to identify and retrieve stolen precious metals and jewelry in a timely manner. Recommended by the Kearny Police Department, the new law applies to all secondhand dealers, which includes not only pawn shops but all businesses that purchase secondhand precious metals and jewelry.
At its April 26, 2011 meeting, Mayor Alberto G. Santos and the Town Council unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the preservation of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission Inter-Municipal Tax Sharing (ITS) program. Under the ITS formula, municipalities with development in their Meadowlands district pay a portion of tax revenues from development into the tax sharing fund and municipalities where there is less development receive payment from the fund.
On April 16, 2011, the Town of Kearny held its annual river cleanup at Riverbank Park in Kearny. Led by Councilwoman Carol Jean Doyle, numerous volunteers showed up at the park’s Frank A. Vincent Marina to help remove litter and debris from the banks of the Passaic River. Many school children participated as did volunteers from the Woman’s Club of Arlington, the Optimist Club, the Kearny Chapter of UNICO and Pathways to Independence.
