Kearny resident Stephen R. Koziel recently advanced to the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor of the Boy Scouts of America.  This achievement was the result of many years of scouting activities, which includes earning at least 21 merit badges, leadership positions and an extensive community service project.

Stephen’s community service project is a remarkable video, entitled We Are Athletes, showcasing athletes with physical disabilities – like him – who participate in the Children’s Lightning Wheels Paralympic Sport Club and compete in athletic competitions.  While Stephen has broken barriers personally in the track and field javelin, shot put and discus categories, his video seeks to have a much broader impact by shattering misconceptions about persons with physical disabilities.  In his video we hear the voices of athletes with physical disabilities and we learn about their dedication, training, hard work and athletic achievements.

In achieving Eagle Scout status, Stephen has made his community a better place and brought honor not only to himself but also to his Troop, family and hometown of Kearny.  Mayor Alberto G. Santos and the Town Council congratulate him on his accomplishments and extend their best wishes for continued success.
