Station 1 Firehouse at 47 Davis Ave is Re-Opened
Kearny Mayor Alberto G. Santos, Fire Chief Stephen Dyl and Fire Commissioner Eileen Eckel are pleased to announce the re-opening of the Station 1 Firehouse at 47 Davis Avenue. Kearny’s Engine Company 1 responds to fires throughout town from this location. On March 16, 2010 Station 1 was closed due to structural and electrical issues that worsened after extensive storm water events in early March.
Immediate action was taken to assess the extent of the damage and seriousness of the issues. A structural survey was conducted by Severud Associates Consulting Engineers, who made the determination that the area above the overhead doors was in danger of collapsing. After a public quote process, Building Construction Services was hired to replace the steal beams and brickwork above both overhead doors. That work has been completed. Additional structural work will be completed while the building is occupied.
In addition, Innovative Engineering was hired to complete a survey of the electrical system. After a public quote process, Manor Electric was hired to complete the repairs identified as priority items by Innovative Engineering. There will be additional electrical repairs while the Station is open.
After several days of cleaning the building by Kearny Firefighters, the Station 1 Firehouse was reopened on Tuesday, August 3. Firefighters were greeted by posters made by neighborhood children welcoming them back.
Station 1 is the oldest, active firehouse in Kearny. The building was originally opened on January 21, 1901. An addition to the building was constructed in 1926.
