Notice – Municipal Courts – Resumption of Driver’s License and Registration Suspensions for Parking Ticket Violations as of October 1, 2024
Effective October 1, 2024, the Judiciary will resume enforcement of penalties, including suspensions of driving privileges, for individuals with parking ticket violations. This returns to the legislative framework following a temporary adjustment during the Covid-19 pandemic, when some people could not reasonably attend to parking tickets due to the public health emergency.
In addition to this notice, the Judiciary is updating its Municipal Courts page to inform court users of the resumption of penalties in parking matters.
Starting October 1, 2024, defendants who have not appeared in court or who have not satisfied an outstanding parking ticket will receive individualized notices informing them of options, including to contact the court or to make payments using NJMCdirect. Those notices will specifically advise defendants that penalties will be imposed if they do not respond or pay the parking ticket.
Consistent with Directive# 12-21
(“Municipal Courts — Time Payment Plans and Payment Alternatives”), payment arrangements will be available for any person who appears in court and is ordered to pay their parking ticket. Defendants who do not contact the court or otherwise appear will be subject to penalties consistent with the law.

Payments:
Defendants may continue to make payments for parking and traffic matters, as well as time payments through the municipal court’s online payment website at NJMCdirect.com.

It is through the Municipal Courts that citizens in the State of New Jersey come into contact with the judicial system, either as a defendant, a victim, or a witness. Since most citizens never appear before another court, it is from their experience in the Municipal Courts that most people base their conclusions about the quality of justice in New Jersey.
The Municipal Courts are considered courts of limited jurisdiction, having responsibility for motor vehicle offenses, parking tickets, minor criminal-type offenses (for example, simple assault, bad checks), municipal ordinance offenses (such as dog barking or building code violations) and other offenses, such as fish and game violations. A Municipal Court usually has jurisdiction over only cases that occur within the boundaries of its municipality.
The Court Administrator is Ana Maria D. Matos. The balance of the staff consists of a Deputy Court Administrator, a Violations Clerk, an Assistant Violations Clerk and 1 Clerk positions.
The Judiciary provides uniform and extensive training to all Municipal Court Judges and personnel. The Court Administrator has obtained certification through a course of study the completion of a written and oral examination process allowing her to use the title of Certified Municipal Court Administrator.
