The Mayor and Town Council of Kearny and the Kearny Recreation Commission will hold a Public Meeting for final project design review of the Gunnell Oval Recreational Complex Redevelopment project at the Town of Kearny Town Hall Council Chambers, 402 Kearny Avenue, Kearny, New Jersey at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, 2017.
A public meeting for the same purpose was previously held on February 15, 2017. As a result of public comments from that meeting, revised site plan renderings of the proposed improvements have been prepared by Neglia Engineering Associates. Attached for reference by residents in advance of the public meeting are the two new renderings and the current site conditions
The principal differences between the two renderings are as follows: the first rendering (“Plan A”) necessitates the use of temporary fencing in the area shared by Pony League and the main soccer field which has a 70 x 120 yard dimension. The second rendering (“Plan B”) eliminates the need for temporary fencing by reducing the length of the main soccer field to 115 yards and reducing the right field distance of one of the Pony League fields and one of the Little League fields. Both renderings also include a playground for small children, an outdoor fitness area, walking paths, and volleyball and tennis courts. The existing skate-park and basketball areas are also maintained in both renderings.
Neglia Engineering Associates will provide a brief presentation with site plan renderings and lead discussion with Town residents to encourage questions and comments on the project design. All members of the public are invited to attend and will have an opportunity to ask questions.
The primary objective of this project is the redevelopment of the Gunnell Oval Recreational Complex as a modern artificial turf sports complex including the environmental component of an engineered cap to minimize potential exposure to historic fill materials present on-site while implementing storm water management controls that minimize the impact of frequent flooding at this complex and surrounding residential and industrial neighborhoods due to the influence of the tidal Kearny Marsh.
Planning Documents concerning the project area are available for review at the Town Clerk’s Office, Kearny Town Hall, 402 Kearny Avenue, Kearny, New Jersey. For information please call (201) 955-7400.
