Kearny, NJ – On Friday, September 9, 2022, the students of Kearny High School assembled in the school stadium for their annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony. Martin Nystrom, who participated in the WTC rescue efforts in the days after September 11, 2001, led the ceremony. In attendance were family members of Kearny residents who died on 9/11. During the ceremony, a US flag was raised at the school’s 9/11 memorial which includes a piece of WTC Steel and a monument with a marble center depicting students from the High School watching the events unfold through the windows of their classrooms.
Also in attendance were Superintendent of Schools Flora Encarnacao, High School Principal Jacki Richardson, Fire Chief Joseph Mastandrea, Police Chief George King, and Mayor Alberto G. Santos. The Town of Kearny gathers every year on 9/11 to pause, reflect and remember the lives lost and to hoor the survivors and rescuers.
