Mayor Carol Jean Doyle and Kearny Town Council gather in remembrance at the annual Mass, commemorating the sacrifice and bravery of Father John P. Washington and the Dorchester’s Chaplains, 81 years ago. United States Army Transport ship, Dorchester, faced a tragic fate as it was torpedoed by a German U-Boat in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. Amidst the chaos and impending disaster, these four valiant men, including a Rabbi, Alexander Goode; two Protestant ministers, Reverend George Fox, and Reverend Clark Poling; and a Catholic priest, Father John P. Washington, selflessly put others before themselves. They handed over their life jackets, offered comfort, and stood in unwavering solidarity, praying as the ship sank beneath them. A poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of unity and sacrifice.
