On Saturday, October 12, 2019, Mayor Alberto G. Santos and Councilmembers Carol Jean Doyle, Susan McCurrie, Maytrine De Castro and Peter Santana joined Emma Quintana, members of Mujeres Valientes (Brave Women) and Minette’s Angels Foundation for the 16th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Tie a Pink Ribbon event in front of Kearny Town Hall.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the pink ribbons are meant to send the message that “Mammograms Save Lives.” Mujeres Valientes (Brave Women) is a support group, founded 16 years ago by Kearny resident Emma Quintana, for women and families battling breast cancer. The Mayor said, “I want to thank all of the members of Mujeres Valientes (Brave Women) for their compassion, their strength and their willingness to help others in our community. I still remember the day 16 years ago when Emma Quintana approached me to begin a tri-lingual support group (English, Spanish and Portuguese) for residents of Kearny, Harrison and East Newark. Over the years, the members of this organization have supported each other and increased public awareness about the importance of early detection. It is a great honor to join you today to raise awareness and offer support to women and their families who have suffered through breast cancer.”
The kick-off event in the Town of Kearny is co-sponsored by Mujeres Valientes. This year, Minette’s Angels Foundation participated in the event. For more information about Breast Cancer, please visit the American Cancer Society’s web site at https://www.cancer.org.
