The Town of Kearny hosted two We Are One – Know Your Rights Workshops in February 2025, providing invaluable resources on immigration and community support. The first workshop took place on Sunday, February 16, at the VFW, organized by Council Member Marytrine De Castro in collaboration with Mayor Carol Jean Doyle, Congresswoman Nellie Pou, Senator Angela McKnight, County Executive Craig Guy, Assemblywoman Barbara Stamato, and Assemblyman William Sampson. The second workshop was held on Friday, February 28, at the Henrietta Benstead Senior Citizens Center, hosted by Mayor Doyle and Council Members De Castro, Fred Esteves, and Gerald Ficeto, with additional support from Congresswoman Pou, Senator McKnight, and Assemblywoman Stamato.
At both events, Julia Bernal, Executive Director of We Are One NJ, led the Right to Know presentation, offering crucial guidance on the immigration process and available resources. The February 28 session also featured Ingrid Echeverria, Esq., who provided insight into Immigration Law, including expedited removal, deportation relief, court hearing preparation, work authorization, and guardianship for minors.
Residents attending both workshops had the opportunity to receive flu and COVID-19 vaccines, administered by nurses from North Hudson Community Action Corporation, and access mental health resources provided by Martha Silva of the Hudson County Chapter of NAMI.
