What are the guidelines for snow removal from the streets and sidewalks in the Town of Kearny?
In event of a snow emergency, please follow these guidelines:
1. Remove cars from the curb area and park in your driveway, if possible. The streets can be cleared most effectively with the fewest possible number of vehicles parked on them.
2. Remove all vehicles from emergency snow routes or they will be removed at the owner’s expense. Emergency snow routes are the following:
• Kearny Avenue – entire length
• Bergen Avenue – from Passaic Avenue to DPW Facility
• Davis Avenue – from Midland Avenue to Dukes Street
• Arlington Station and Depot Park including Forest Street from Midland Avenue to railroad tracks; Elm Street from Midland Avenue to the railroad tracks and Garafola Place
• Elm Street – from Midland Avenue to Belleville Pike
• Belgrove Drive, Midland Avenue and the South side of Afton Street
3. Observe all temporary signs posted by the Police or Street Department. Secondary streets will be posted 24 hours in advance of curb to curb clearing.
4. Do not shovel or blow snow from your sidewalk or driveway into the street.
5. In the interest of public safety, please dig out any fire hydrant in front of your property. Do not bury it with shoveled snow.
6. Do not place garbage cans, cones or any other object in the street to save a parking space. Obstructions in the street such as these are illegal.
7. Contact the Town Street Department (201) 998-3700 to report any serious safety concerns such as icy streets, large potholes or snow mounds that restrict the sight lines at intersections.
8. Remove snow from your sidewalk within 12 hours of daylight after a snowstorm.
