Beginning Thursday, June 21st the Kearny Farmers Market will be opened for business. Shoppers will enjoy “JERSEY FRESH” produce like just picked strawberries and blueberries, honey, specialty cookies and breads, and herbs and flowers.
Also, during the market year, shoppers will receive a FREE earth friendly bag reusable canvas shopping bag as long as supplies last, for the purchase of over $10 at any individual vendor. During the months of July and August, a $1 discount coupon will be available to customers that spend $10 or more in a Kearny Market individual vendor. All of the giveaways are courtesy of the Kearny Urban Enterprise Zone.
Senior vouchers are available at the Kearny Health Department. Senior citizens who often live on tight budgets are enjoying the fresh produce through the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program using $20.00 worth of vouchers provided by NJ WIC over the course of the season.
On most Thursdays, during the summer of the 2018 Kearny Farmers Market season, the Kearny Public Library will be hosting Garden Thursdays, featuring live musical entertainment in the library garden. On June 21st Farmers Market opening day, we will feature an outdoor concert.
“We are really proud of the popularity of the Kearny Farmers Market. We expect that this 13th season will be even better than before” said Councilwoman Susan McCurrie. “Where else can you shop Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables, receive a free canvas bag and listen to wonderful live music?” she asked.
The market has already proven to be a plus for our business district. It attracts residents and local employees to the downtown area where they not only shop at the farm stands but also patronize other local businesses. It is also a social center where neighbors meet and stop to chat about the town, the produce or a new recipe. Our market manager also uses the afternoon to distribute information from the health department, recreation department and public works.
Mayor Santos asked for residents to support New Jersey Farmers by coming out and shopping at the Kearny Farmers Market on Thursdays. “There’s such a great variety and freshness of fruits and vegetables, as well as breads and cheeses. You will not be disappointed.” stated Mayor Santos.
The Kearny Farmers Market will be located on Garfield Avenue between Kearny Avenue and Chestnut Street, adjacent to the Kearny Public Library. The market, located on the main avenue in the center of town, provides a convenient location for the residents of Kearny and our neighbors in Harrison, East Newark and North Arlington. The market will be held every Thursday through October, from 12 noon to 6 pm.
There is nothing like a fresh picked Jersey tomato to remind us of the value of our New Jersey farmers. This farmers market supports the New Jersey farmer and brings the freshest possible produce to Kearny families. We all benefit in the end.
