Real Time Data from Kearny’s Air Monitoring Stations at Keegan Landfill
Please note that real time readings are subject to verification. Some readings may be inaccurate due to interference. Other sulfur sources (none have been identified to date) and wind direction may also affect readings. In addition, an air monitoring station may lose power, reception, or experience a device error (in which case it may display N/A instead of a number). Periodically, an air monitoring station will have to be reset; during those periods, it will display NaN instead of a number. The Town’s stations are regularly monitored and any issues will be addressed as promptly as possible.
AMS-1 is located at Harvey Field (at the center of the complex in between the front turfed field and the back grass fields). AMS-2 is located at the northern terminus of Third Street (next to the John Hay Avenue pump station).
Petition and Letter to Demand Closure of the Keegan Landfill
Please join the Town of Kearny in the fight by signing the petition and sending a letter to Governor Phil Murphy to help call attention to the dumping of waste at the Keegan Landfill in Kearny. The State-owned and operated landfill is polluting our air with hydrogen sulfide and causing harm to our environment and health. Kearny demands closure of the Keegan Landfill with an impermeable cap and gas collection system. We will not stop until this stops. In addition, if you smell the sulfur odor, keep calling it in to both the NJ DEP (877-927-6337) and Hudson Regional (201-817-9844) complaint lines.

Keegan Landfill Odor Complaint Hotline
Because of complaints regarding odor emissions from the Keegan Landfill on weekends, holidays, and off hours in the area of Bergen Avenue (between Schuyler and Harrison Avenues), two hotline numbers have been set up for residents to register complaints. We encourage residents to call both numbers. The complaint hotline number is (201) 817-9844. This toll-free number will direct you to Hudson County Regional Health Commission.
Also, residents and concerned citizens may register complaints with the NJDEP, Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste. Their telephone number is (877) 927-6337 and you may call 365 days a year, 24/7.
In addition, it is important to register your complaint to the Office of Governor Phil Murphy at (609) 292-6000.
The Town of Kearny asks that you email KeeganOdor@kearnynj.org to let us know when you have called any or all of the above telephone numbers to register a complaint. Please email your address, the date, time and if possible the case # or name of the person that accepted your complaint.
Action Plan For Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Emissions At Harvey Field
An Environmental Monitoring station will be installed an active at Harvey Field detecting H2S emissions 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. All readings will be recorded.
The monitoring station will be set to take air sampling reading at 10 minute intervals.
When the station detects H2S readings anytime equal to or above the threshold of 15ppb the following actions will be taken:
- The readings will be sent by email/text to the Health Officer. The Health Officer will then confirm that the readings are valid and then make the determination to close Harvey Field.
- Once the determination to close Harvey Field has been made the Health Officer shall direct the head of recreation to close the field immediately. Signs will be posted at the gates stating: “field closed until further notice. Please contact the Recreation Department if you have any questions. (201) 955-7983 Ext. 1)”. If the Head of recreation is not available the Chief of Police will be asked to close the field.
- The Health officer will then monitor the readings until the H2S threshold remains less than 5ppb during a consistent interval period of 30 minutes. Once that level is met for that time frame, the Health Officer will direct the re-opening of Harvey Field.
When the station detects H2S readings anytime equal to above the threshold of 15ppb a second time during the same day the following actions will be taken:
- The readings will be sent by email/text to the Health Officer. The Health Officer will then confirm that the readings are valid and then make the determination to close Harvey Field for the remainder of the day.
- Harvey Field will not be re-opened the next day without a reading of less than 5ppb during a consistent interval period of 30 minute or more prior to opening.
